HOF Steve Carlton 1978-1982 Game-Used Glove, Signed, with Impeccable Provenance, incl Photo-Matches
Rare and significant game-used glove from the extraordinary career of Hall of Famer Steve Carlton. Unquestionably one of the greatest and most dominating lefthanders in major league history, this glove is a stellar representation of the FOUR-time Cy Young Award winner, worn during many of his greatest campaigns and career milestones with the Philadelphia Phillies, including the Phils' world championship season of 1980.
Offered is his 1978-79 Rawlings Fastback model HT76 "Heart of the Hide" glove, manufactured specifically for Carlton's personal professional use, and displaying wonderful seasons-long wear. It features all correct tagging, specs and identifiers, including classic basket web design with a customized velcro enclosure instead of the traditional holster strap - for easier release. Great, optimal use is displayed throughout, including substantial malleability and soiling in the deep well pocket - as well as beautiful overall age and patina to its exterior and interior hide, tags and brandings. Photo-matches and rock-solid provenance abound here, including Lefty's retired number "32" markered above strap tag and again, adjacent to the red Rawlings logo. In addition, the interior displays a strong vintage autograph from Carlton, rendered in blue felt tip, and rating an easy "8".
Thoroughly examined by noted glove expert Denny Esken for 100% Authentic, it has warranted Esken's highest rating and approval.
In 1983, Carlton donated this treasure to an on-air charity auction staged to raise funds for Philadelphia's PBS television affiliate -- and it has been in the possession of the original winner and owner since. Far rarer than jerseys and certainly, bats, one cannot underestimate the significance of this glove. In this purer era, a glove was far more personal, typically broken-in and molded to the hand over mulitple seasons, until the fit and second-skin feel was perfected. Ballplayers, and in particular, pitchers, are a superstitious lot, who tend to compulsively stick with what's working, meaning it's likely this was the day-to-day glove used by the Hall of Famer throughout the Phillies' historic 1978-82 seasons. This is a serious game-used gem, accompanied by substantial and impeccable provenance. By any estimation, this glove is an important Hall of Fame caliber piece of major league history, representing one of its greatest and most celebrated players.
