1978 Super Bowl VVII - Broncos vs. Cowboys - Craig Morton Game-Worn / Used Jersey (Equipment Manager Letter on Broncos Letterhead & Craig Morton Letter)
Craig Morton was a long time Dallas Cowboys quarterback before switching sidelines for the 1978 Super Bowl (XII). Morton led the charge for the AFC Champion Denver Broncos. Roger Staubach (his replacement in Dallas) was the opposite quarterback. This was the first Super Bowl to be played indoors and it was in the heyday of the "Orange Crush" defense (versus the Cowboys offensive prowess). Dallas ultimately won the battle 27-10.
From the Super Bowl is this great offering. It is the game-used jersey of Broncos quarterback Craig Mortion. Front tail has the Russell Athletic size 46 label. The stripes and number identifiers are screened on. "MORTON" is also screened on reverse nameplate.
Morton signed the jersey on the reverse with the inscription, " 1978 Super Bowl XII Game Worn Jersey" - which has since faded. Included with the jersey is a LOA from the Broncos equipment manager who was given the jersey:
"The Craig Morton Denver Broncos Orange Jersey that accompanies this letter is the same jersey that Craig wore during the Super Bowl VII vs The Dallas Cowboys. I was the Broncos Equipment Manager from 1967 to 1983 and was good friends with Craig during his years with the Broncos and we still communicate with each other. After the Super Bowl game in the locker room Craig handed me the jersey as a keepsake. It has been in my possession ever since that game and is the only jersey he wore during the game."
Presumably, because of the last sentence and the difficulty of photo matching it. Also included is a personal letter from Craig Morton explaining how he wore two jerseys in the Super Bowl and didn't know which one he had given the equipment manager.
Post salutations: "You asked about the jersey I handed to you after the '78 Super Bowl game to keep as a remembrance of the game. I guess you didn't realize that I had your assistant get me the spare #7 jersey to change into. The one we wore for the beginning of the game was too tight and I switched. You know it has been so long that I do not remember if it was during the first half or at half time.
I thought your assistant would have told you: anyway I wore two different jerseys during the game. I hope this straightens out the problem you might be having with the certification of the jersey."
