Scarce April 14-60, 1960 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Eastern Regional - Louisville, Kentucky Cassius Clay Program (O'Brien Muhammad Ali Boxing Collection)

This item has the honor of being part of the Glen O’Brien collection. O’Brien’s collection is an important and integral part of boxing history. For countless years, O’Brien collected memorabilia from his hero Muhammad Ali. He was considered a close personal friend of Ali and deemed his biggest fan by the legend. O’Brien purchased many items directly from Ali and did exclusive autograph signings with him.

This particular offering was part of the rare and unique archive O’Brien had and was discovered in a singular cardboard box. Together and complete from the early amateur career of the Greatest. O’Brien’s family attests that this magical gathering was part of the items purchased directly from Ali.

In March of 1960, a young Cassius Clay of Louisville, Kentucky had already been deemed one of the best amateur fighters in the U.S. His skills were honed enough to earn a spot on the Olympic Team. Making the country proud, he earned a gold medal for his efforts.

Clay was brillant as an amateur in 1960. He was 18 and stood 6'1" and weighted in at 180. He earned his sixth Kentucky Golden Gloves title and early in March. Clay's flashy, fast-punching style helped him the Tournament Of Champions Competition in Chicago. An interesting tidbit was that he was fighting as a heavyweight so his brother could compete as a light-heavyweight without having to fight against his brother.

After Clay's Tournament of Champions Competition victory in Chicago, Clay competed in the Inter-City Golden Glove Bouts at Madison Square Garden in New York. Over 15,000 fans saw him come from behind to score a third round knockout over Gary Jawish of Washington, D.C. (the Eastern Champion). Jawish in the first round out-boxed Clay. However, Cassius started the third with a pair of rights that floored Jawish. It was over in 1.59 of the third round.

Next, he went on to conquer the AAU Regional Championship before starting his trek to the Olympics. This program is from the April 14-60, 1960 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Eastern Regional - Louisville, Kentucky. It features a young Cassius in his last days as an amateur. The cover sports the Olympic rings, Roman Coliesum and Rome 1960. The program is in Ex condition with expected aging/handling wear and a central vertical fold. Overall, an extremely scarce program for an advanced Ali enthusaist.
