sold Circa Mid 70's New York Cosmos Pele Game-Worn Used Road Jersey
One thing is certain about Pele game-worn jerseys, there simply aren't enough to go around. The Babe Ruth/Michael Jordan/Tiger Woods/Muhammad Ali of the soccer world reached iconic status - globally. Although never plentiful, many of Pele's game jerseys are pertinent to his exhibition performances of the '80s. In 1975 the Cosmos inked Pele to a deal as they persuaded him out of retirement.
This green mesh Champion shirt which is a size "Medium"was worn by Pele for road games - most likely in 1976-77 due to the name on reverse. The name "PELE" across the back is screened on in a straight line. Names on back were screened on in both styles arched and straight line. White ribbing surrounds the crew-neck and both sleeve ends. Situated in the collar is a size flag tag which matches the size of other known Pele exemplars from this period.
All of the identifiers are heat-pressed. The Logo which appears on the left breast bears the New York Cosmos logo. This logo is identical to those matched from this era. It seems that the Cosmos Logo Variations show inconsistency with "New York Cosmos" placements varying with the name turned further left or right. The logo variances would differ from player to player on the same team and from the same game. Logo variations would also feature the wings within the logo, filled in solid white and others with only outlines of white bordering within the shape of the logo. By 1977, the wings within the logo were no longer filled in solid, demonstrating that they were moving away with this style. This green mesh variation does not feature any armband as it is attributed to later mid 70's season use.
Pele insisted on tighter jerseys to prevent the opposition from holding him. The mesh pullover shows light use.
